Countess Gytha / Mufulira Basic School Partnership

Storytelling Project

In 2003 a successful grant application was made to the British Council for a Global Curriculum Project grant for a storytelling project involving staff from Countess Gytha and Mufulira Basic School. The objective was for staff to learn storytelling skills from each other through the experience of teaching together in each other's schools.

Andrew Bakuluma spent three weeks here telling traditional African stories to the children in years 1 and 3. At the end of his visit the year 1 pupils performed The Pig and the Tortoise and the year 3 children The Jungle Boy and the Princess for the pupils, staff, parents, Governors and community.

Mrs. Bishop and Miss Lawrence then worked with pupils and staff in Mufulira. They spent a week telling pupils traditional stories using Big Books. At the end of their visit the Grade 4 pupils performed Goldilocks and the Three Bears for the pupils, staff, parents, School Board and community in Mufulira.
